spontaneous generation the false idea that living things can come from non-living things
controlled experiment an experiment where all of the factors are the same except for one factor
autotroph organisms that can make their own food
heterotroph organisms that cannot make their own food
homeostasis maintenance of stable internal conditions
classification the process of grouping things based on their similarities
taxonomy the scientific study of how living things are classified
genus a classification grouping that contains similar closely related organisms
species a group of similar organisms that can reproduce with one another
evolution the process that species change over long periods of time
binomial nomenclature the naming system in which each organism is given a unique two-part name (created by Linnaeus)
prokaryote organisms whose cells lack a nucleus
nucleus a dense area in the cell that contains nucleic acids (controls the cell)
eukayote organisms with cells that contain nuclei
