lessons 1 and 2

Term Definition
atom basic building block of all non-living matter
nucleus center part of the atom that contains the protons and neutrons
protons positive sub-atomic particle (+)
neutrons neutral sub-atomic particle (o)
electrons negative sub-atomic particle (-)
Bohr model a model of the atom, developed by Danish scientist, Niels Bohr, that shows electrons moving in orbit around the nucleus of the atom
electron cloud model the model of the atom that shows electrons forming a cloud as they move around the nucleus of the atom
element matter that is made of just one kind of atom
atomic number the number of protons in an atom of an element
periodic table a chart that contains many facts about the elements and their atoms
Dmitri Mendeleev a Russian scientist who in 1886 created the periodic table of the elements arranged by number and family
Neils Bohr danish scientist who developed the bohr model of the atom
atomic mass weight of the atom
energy levels levels of electrons in the atom
metals shiny, can be shaped, good conductors of heat and electricity ex-iron (Fe)
non-metals dull, can not be shaped, not good conductors of heat and electricity ex-hydrogen (H)
semi-metals shares properties of both metals and non-metals ex-silicon (Si)
noble gases don't combine easily with other elements ex-helium (He)
family a group of elements found vertically on the periodic table having similar characteristics
problem a question or problem that you can research and test
research the background info about a scientific problem gained from using the internet, books, etc.
hypothesis predictions or an educated guess based in the research
procedure the steps you will follow to solve a scientific problem
observations any changes you notice during the experiment. could be in the form of smell, change in matter, size, shape, color, etc.
data the info that is gathered during in the experiment represented in a table, chart, graph, etc.
conclusion statement about the results of the experiment. states whether hypothesis was true, false, partially true
theory final factual statement about the results of the experiment applied in general terms
order of the scientific method problem, research, hypothesis, procedure, materials, experiment, data, observations, conclusion, and theory
