virus a small infectious agent that can replicate only inside the living cells of an organism
virulence Extremely infectious, malignant, or poisonous. Used of a disease or toxin.
serum the clear portion of any liquid separated from its more solid elements.
pyuria The presence of pus in the urine, usually a sign of urinary tract infection.
placebo A substance containing no medication and prescribed or given to reinforce a patient's expectation to get well.
pathogen An agent that causes disease, especially a living microorganism such as a bacterium, virus, or fungus
parasite An organism that grows, feeds, and is sheltered on or in a different organism while contributing nothing to the survival of its host
immunosuppressant An agent that suppresses the body's immune response.
diluent – A substance that dilutes the strength of a solution or mixture
acetylcysteine a derivative of cysteine used as a mucolytic in various bronchopulmonary disorders and as an antidote to acetaminophen poisoning.
cirrhosis a chronic degenerative disease in which normal liver cells are damaged and are then replaced by scar tissue
conjunctivitis an inflammation or redness of the lining of the white part of the eye and the underside of the eyelid (conjunctiva) that can be caused by infection, allergic reaction, or physical agents like infrared or ultraviolet light.
fibromyalgia a neurosensory disorder characterized by widespread muscle pain, joint stiffness, and fatigue. The condition is chronic (ongoing), but pain comes and goes and moves about the body.
gastroesophageal reflux disease(GERD) any of various conditions resulting from gastroesophageal reflux, ranging in seriousness from mild to life-threatening; principal characteristics are heartburn and regurgitation
otitis media an infection of the middle ear space, behind the eardrum (tympanic membrane).
parkinson’s disease A progressive nervous disease occurring most often after the age of 50, associated with the destruction of brain cells that produce dopamine, and characterized by muscular tremor, slowing of movement, partial facial paralysis, posture, and weakness
rhinorrhea A discharge from the nasal mucous membrane, especially if excessive.
schizophrenia a psychotic disorder (or a group of disorders) marked by severely impaired thinking, emotions, and behaviors
psoriasis a chronic, non-contagious disease characterized by inflamed lesions covered with silvery-white scabs of dead skin
alopecia hair loss (baldness)
